Fantastic B&B, wonderful hosts!

We were staying in Stratfrord Upon Avon for the half Marathon and couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. The location was very central, giving us easy access to all the key attractions and close to rail station. Peter and Ruth go out of their way to make your stay the best it can be, providing immaculate rooms and a wonderful breakfast made to your specific requests (Best scrambled egg on toast ever!). Would recommend to anyone for a wonderful stay in Stratford! Will be staying again in the near future. Many thanks Amie and Rebecca

A ‘Wonderful’ Trip Advisor review for Ambleside Guesthouse

This was my first trip to the UK and what an introduction! Peter and Ruth are perfect hosts. The location to town is perfect and the house is immaculately clean. The breakfast was the best I had the entire trip to the UK. Peter has a wealth of knowledge about the area and recommended a great place to eat as well as several other “must see ” locations in other parts of the country. We did visit a couple of the places he suggested and they were well worth it. I would stay there again without any hesitation and would recommend the Ambleside to everyone who is taking a trip to the UK!

Shakespeare’s birthday celebrations April 2012

Stratford upon Avon is gearing up for its big day of the year – the celebrations for Shakespeare’s birthday which will take place on April 21st and 22nd.  There is a traditional parade through the town involving period costumes and music with local Stratford residents, members of the RSC, dignitaries, local schools and visiting celebrities.  They all carry flowers to commemorate the Bard so it’s a colourful event and local cultural groups put on displays at various locations in the town.

It all happens just a few minutes’ walk away from Ambleside Guest House so give us a call if you’d like more information.

New productions from the RSC

There’s plenty to look forward to at the RSC in the next twelve months.

The World Shakespeare Festival runs from 23 April to November 2012 in collaboration with other leading UK and international arts organizations.  Plays include The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night and The Tempest (Shakespeare’s Shipwreck Trilogy) as well as King John, and later in the year, Richard III in October.

The RSC has also released details of its winter season October 2012 to March 2013 which includes The Merry Wives of Windsor, Brecht’s The Life of Galileo, Pushkin’s Boris Godunov and the family production The Mouse and his Child.

Tickets are on sale now.

Essence – a restaurant we love to recommend

Essence, in Red Lion Square, right in the middle of Stratford is a great place to eat.  They are open from 10 am, serving coffee, snacks, lunch and dinner.

We’ve been several times for lunch and dinner and it’s always a really good experience – great food and friendly service.  It’s a really useful find if you need a pre-theatre meal as it’s just a five minute stroll over to the RSC.

The restaurant is tucked away in Red Lion Square but well worth seeking out.  Highly recommended.

Latest Trip Advisor review

We were really pleased to receive this review recently:

Ambleside is a home from home…

After a long journey down from the north in freezing conditions, we arrived at Ambleside to a very warm welcome from proprietors Peter & Ruth.  Leaving our car in Ambleside’s private car park at the rear, we were shown to our room. Before leaving us to unpack, Peter gave us some very useful recommendations of places to visit for our evening meal – luckily we had no need to use the car, as the town’s eateries are within a five minute walk. Being fans of programmes ‘The Hotel Inspector’ & ‘Three in a Bed’, we knew the weak points of hotel cleanliness, and did our best to find them. We were utterly defeated – Ambleside has to be the most spotless guest house we’ve stayed in. More than enough wardrobe space (with ample clothes hangers – often overlooked), a mini widescreen TV, comfy beds, tea/coffee tray (Earl Grey!), and immaculate ensuite. Before departing for our meal, we were invited to complete the breakfast menu: a huge range of options, from fresh fruit, cereals, fruit juice & coffee to a full cooked breakfast which can be individually customised (1 or 2 eggs, fried, scrambled etc), or just tick the whole lot!

Having slept soundly, we went down for breakfast & were greeted by Ruth, who had our fruit juice prepared, and soon returned with a cafetiere of coffee & rounds of toast. Peter brought our breakfasts, which were hot, plentiful & of the best ingredients. He would periodically return to refill our coffee, and bring us more toast. We had to eventually call a halt to his hospitality, as we feared we’d have no room left for the delights of Stratford’s tearooms!

We only stayed one night, but wish it had been longer. Peter and Ruth felt like old friends, and couldn’t do enough to make our short visit a happy one. We’re beginning to wonder if we should be posting this review, as we want to keep Ambleside our own little secret!
